Courageous Advocacy
The Christian vision at Burley Gate school inspires our school community to be courageous advocates not just in our local community but in the wider world. Our curriculum and Picture News focus in weekly collective worship allows the children to understand courageous advocates both past and present and reflect on injustice and how barriers can be overcome. Our children are encouraged to think about action they could take to challenge injustice and become agents of change in the wider world.
Below are some examples of courageous advocates our pupils learn and know about who personify being agents of change.
“What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” Micha 6:8
Our Christian vision of ‘Love Your Neighbour’ gives a firm foundation to the understanding of love and belonging and inspires our children to have a sense of responsibility in both our school and the local and global community. They are able to take action to begin change and recognise the impact their actions can have on the world that we live in. Our Year 6 children hold positions of responsibility including Eco Warriors, E-Safety monitors and school council representatives.
Our Christian and British values are at the heart of everything we do and events and days to raise awareness are part of the school calendar including:
- Odd socks for anti-bullying week
- Collection of donations for the local food bank
- Acts of remembrance
- Black history month
- King’s Coronation
- Internet Safety Day
We support charities both local and globally including:
- Little Princess Trust
- George’s fund
- RSPCA
- Children in Need
- Reindeer run for St Michaels Hospice
- British Royal Legion – poppy appeal
